This postcard, shows the birthplace of John Pierpont, lawyer, poet, Civil War chaplain, and the grandfather of the banker John Pierpont Morgan.

Here are some of the interesting finds from the Morris Historical Society. This REWARD ad, was from The Litchfield Enquirer, January 30, 1906. F.H Turkington was a selectman and also a local Sheriff.

Engine 2
On Friday July 28, 2023, The Morris Fire Department celebrated their five year anniversary. The Morris Historical Society buildings were open and Engine 2 was parked on the front lawn of the Society. Several items from the Museum were displayed with the truck.
Road Grader
The old Morris Highway Department grader was in the 2023 Memorial Day Parade. It was on a flatbed trailer pulled by a Highway Department truck.

In the spring or 2023, the Morris Historical Society hosted the fourth and fifth grade classes at James Morris School for a visit to the Old Mill Schoolhouse and the Museum.

PFC William Weik Jr.
Drafted into the Army on Dec. 3, 1942. PFC William Weik Jr., Co.1 350th regiment, 88th Infantry Division, U.S. Army trained as a Browning Automatic Rifle team member and ended up in Naples, Italy on Feb. 20, 1944. On Oct. 12, 1944, one month short of his 25th birthday, Billy was killed in action. He had been on the front line for almost 113 days.
Lt. Rollin Skilton
Rollin Skilton graduated from James Morris High School and then from West Point as a member of the class of 1946. When the Korean War broke out, Rollin was the platoon leader of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was a decisive battle in the Korean War. On Nov. 27, 1950 the Chinese Army attacked the UN Forces. 30,000 United Nation Troops were encircled and attacked by 120,000 Chinese Troops. On Dec. 6, 1950, Lt. Skilton was assisting in the withdrawal of troops at the Chosin Reservoir. The result was a fierce battle in which Lt. Skilton was seriously wounded and died.

On Wednesday, June 5th 2024 the Morris Historical Society had the pleasure of hosting the James Morris fourth grade class. It was a wonderful afternoon showing them some of the history of Morris in the Old Mill School House.

Steve Weik's Army uniform.
Steve Weik has donated one of his uniforms to the Historical Society. He spent a career in the Army retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Steve is the son of Edie Weik.
